Built in the 1960's, Mt. Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, Massachusetts is badly in need of repair.  Serving students from Williamstown, Lanesboro, Hancock, New Ashford and other areas, the current state of the building is being questioned.  After a 2005 inspection by NEASC, their report concluded the following:

"The present school site and plant do not adequately support all aspects of the educational program and support the services for student learning.  Not all areas of the school are handicapped accessible, e.g. the media center loft and the lower level areas.  The gymnasium locker rooms are inadequate and are not secure.  Science labs in the middle school are lacking sufficient sings in the laboratory work areas.  Parking is inadequate for after school and weekend events.  Science labs are outdated.  A committee has been established to develop plans to either renovate the presnt school or build a new school....The present facitilty does not support or enhance student learning...The physical plant and facilities do not meet all applicable federal and state laws and are not in compliance with all local fire, health, and safety regulations.  The water supply is not potable.  Air quality in some areas of the building does not meet state standards, and one room must be closed as the result of air quality.  Areas of the building such as areas of the library and the lavatories are not handicapped accessible.  The indoor ramp in the gym is not at the proper pitch for effective use.  Emergency routes and exits are not posted in all areas.  The amount of flammable material (paper) posted on the walls and chemical storage in the science rooms does not comply with new Massachusetts fire regulations.  Areas that threaten the safety of students are the first concern to those who oversee learning."

For these reasons, proposals have been made to either build a brand-new school or make improvements to the existing structure.  Plans for future improvements or entirely new buildings have been drawn up by architects Dore & Whittier Inc. Here, the plans for several possibilities are presented.
